Marie-Laure Cazin
Artist, filmmaker and researcher, teacher in video and digital arts. Doctor in Art and Art Sciences in Marseille university FR. Member of the Enactive Virtuality lab, Tallinn university, Estonia.
Also teacher in IMAIC master in l'Ecole des Arts, university of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
Marie-Laure Cazin has been working on art-science projects for 20 years, focusing on the creation of innovative interactive and VR cinematographic devices that integrate the possibilities of digital technology and neuroscience tools. Her work has been exhibited in France and abroad in numerous galleries and museums since 1996 : Espace Paul Ricard, Palais de Tokyo, Jeu de Paume, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, State Painting and Sculpture Museum, Turkey, Museo Alejandro Otero, Caracas, Venezuela, Emory University, Atlanta, USA, Ludwig Forum Museum, Aachen, Germany, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle, Basel, Switzerland, Beursschouwburg, Brussels, Espace Kicks and Bricks, Vienna, Galerie Anton Weller Paris, Deweer Art Gallery, Belgium, Gegenwartskunst Museum, Basel, Switzerland, etc. and in festivals, Laval Virtual, Vidéoformes Clermont-Ferrant, Ars Numerica Montbéliard, Nuit Blanche Bruxelles, Lost and found De WAAG, Institute for Old and New Medias, Amsterdam. She has made several short fiction films that have been selected for major international festivals (Locarno International Film Festival 2002, Switzerland, and Mostra de Sâo Paulo, Brazil, 2006).
Her most recent projects are prototypes of neuro-emotive films, using EEGs to analyse viewers' emotions :« Emotive Cinema» (V1 in 2014 and V2 in 2023) and EMOTIVE VR CINEMA (2024) which combines EEG and VR headsets.
She has collaborated with a number of scientific partners: LS2N Université de Nantes, laBri Scrime, Université de Bordeaux, Interaction lab, School of Digital Technology, Tallinn, Numédiart institute, Ecole polytechnique de Mons, the Lagis and the Lifl, Université de Lille, Laboratoire L3i, Université de la Rochelle.
Alongside her creative work, she has conducted an European research project entitled "Freud's last Hypnosis, Emotion driven interactions", as part of a European post-doctoral grant, Mobilitas Pluss, ETAG, Talinn University (2021-2022) and the Enactive Virtuality Lab, Tallinn University.
She is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (1995), the Jan van Eyck Akademie (Netherlands, 1997) and Le Fresnoy, studio national des arts contemporains (2001-03). She is a Doctor in Art and Art Sciences, and she defended her thesis in January 2020 at the University of Aix-Marseille, entitled 'Cinéma et neurosciences, du Cinéma Emotif à Emotive VR'.
