TALM-Tours library
The library of the TALM-Tours School of Art and Design is a core feature of the campus’ identity. This place of work, study and research has been undergoing transformation since 2018: the library is shifting from a studious book sanctuary to a hive of learning, with a workshop where students can also produce their art. With books and digital resources now being used side by side, the librarian has introduced new ways of using the library that are better suited to students’ needs and make the facility more appealing. The new décor is symbolic of this paradigm shift, with sofas, armchairs, cushions and blankets being added to more functional furniture to create a comfortable environment. A refreshments area is also being added to the library, where users will be able to enjoy hot drinks and light bites.
The library’s collection contains 18,000 printed documents and 200 French and international journals. It is a place for experiencing and confronting art, knowledge and contemporary creations. It also provides the documentation needed for research and for developing conservation and restoration techniques. With its new workshop layout, the library encourages students’ ability to debate, contemplate and perform research, in close cooperation with the teaching staff. The librarians’ job is to help students understand how to use documentary resources. They engage with students individually or as a team over all three cycles of education to teach students about research methodology.
