Peinture obsolescence déprogrammée
Overview
Started in 2017, the Peinture obsolescence déprogrammée (Painting – unplanned obsolescence) research programme looks at the current state of painting in the digital age. It provides images and sources for reflection about the evolution of the pictorial medium when in contact with digital technologies. With radical change to observation due to the ubiquitous computer screen, the proliferation of images, and the intrusion of algorithms, this new visual image system reinvents and redefines contemporary pictorial practices.
This project has two goals. Firstly, to enhance visibility of the complex reality of little-known and rarely studied contemporary artistic practices. Secondly, to address the theory of a subject that has not yet been properly investigated.
Research results
This research is based on scientific and artistic events developed within the TALM-Angers Art option. Three study days were organised: the Renouveau pictural & Esthétique numérique (Pictural Renewal & Digital Aesthetics) at the Angers fine arts museum on 20-21 November 2018; and La Peinture reconfigurée par le numérique (Digitally Reconfigured Painting) study day on 3 May 2019 at the National Institute of Art History. Seven exhibitions will be organised in partner museums between June 2020 and 2022. The Summer 2020 MASC Sables-d’Olonne exhibition was postponed due to the pandemic. A presentation of the research was published, designed like the first French-speaking synthesis of the subject. Lastly, a web site will be created with a database to make the entire corpus and exhibition photos more accessible.
Connection to the curriculum
The research and creation workshop Peinture, codes, écrans (Painting, Tropes, Screens) feeds on activities developed by the research programme. Students took part and produced pieces for three study days and seven exhibitions.
