Applicative workshop in sound design, support for multidisciplinary experiments
The example of sonification
Sonification questions the use of sound to convey information, meaning, in different contexts. This practice has been experimented and challenged in applicative workshops. Consequently, in September 2014, with the university campus, students in sound design working with ENSCI-Les Ateliers students were able to experiment the sonification of a new positive energy building, the Maison d’Île-de France. The objective was to explain the building’s operation in terms of energy production and consumption through sound devices. Students developed multiple experiments to generate reflection. Following this workshop, three training graduates formed the Ménure team and developed a permanent sound installation in the hall which was inaugurated in 2017. Three different sounds reveal the building’s energy loss, balance and energy gain. Students in sound design were involved in the design and assistance of this project. The question of sonification can be found in projects developed by the students during the course of their studies.
